High Tatras, 30 September 2026

The seventh edition of the traditional Tatra cycling event “Tatranská cyklosloboda” once again confirmed the growing interest in sustainable mobility in our highest mountains. The event, which brought together local residents, tourism organisations and cycling enthusiasts, sent a clear message to the relevant authorities: the High Tatras urgently need safe cycling infrastructure.

This year’s cycling event attracted nearly 70 participants of all ages, demonstrating that cycling in the Tatras has no limits. The oldest participant, 78-year-old Gabriel, and just 4-year-old Vincent, the youngest adventurer of the event, became symbols of how cycling can bring generations together.

The high turnout, however, also highlighted the pressing issue of missing infrastructure. The organisers, the civic association Žijem v Tatrách! and the Poprad Cycling Coalition, have therefore formulated a call addressed to the key institutions in the region.

Call to the Relevant Authorities

The organisers are officially calling on the City of Vysoké Tatry, the City of Poprad, the City of Svit, municipalities across the Tatra region, the Administration of TANAP National Park and the Prešov Self-Governing Region (PSK) to strengthen cooperation and open communication in the preparation of cycling paths. This communication must take place not only between the institutions themselves, but above all with the general public. The Tatra region already has a high-quality strategic document – the Sustainable Mobility Plan. The aim of this call is to turn plans on paper into real, coordinated and fully functional solutions on the ground.

The Power of Partnership and Community

The success of the seventh edition was built primarily on exemplary cooperation across the entire region. Local residents, the Poprad Cycling Coalition, the Regional Tourism Organisation (OOCR) Region High Tatras, the City of Vysoké Tatry and local tourism businesses all contributed to the organisation of the event. The event clearly confirmed that the everyday lives of local residents, environmentally friendly cycling and tourism can and must go hand in hand in the Tatras.

The organisers would like to express their sincere thanks to the partners who supported the event and provided facilities for the cyclists. APLEND Kamzík provided refreshments after the sporting activity, while the digital gallery Poliankovo and Dobrá hračka donated gifts for the youngest participants and contributed to the development of the Tatra community. A huge thank you goes to the Police of the Slovak Republic and the Municipal Police of Vysoké Tatry for their professional escort and for securing the entire route. Thanks to you, the event was as safe and smooth as possible for all 70 participants!

Representatives of the civic associations believe that the tremendous energy, determination and commitment of the community, together with the demonstrated willingness to cooperate, will soon translate into the first metres of new and safe cycling paths in the High Tatras.
