Museum of the Tatra National Park in Tatranská Lomnica

Museum of the Tatra National Park in Tatranská Lomnica

The Museum of the National park continues the traditions dating back to 1883 when the Hungarian Carpathian Association founded the Carpathian Museum in Poprad. In 1949, the Tatra National Park Act was established. One of the tasks of the park administration was to create a research station and a museum. From its establishment in 1957 until 1959, the Museum was based in the Podtatranské museum in Poprad. After moving to Tatranská Lomnica, the first exhibition was created in the so-called Sečéniovský letohrádok. The new exposition was installed in a new building, one of the first purpose-built new museums in Slovakia. The museum’s collections contain a number of objects from the fields of botany, zoology, history, cartography, geology and ethnography. For larger groups, the museum also offers the screening of films with a capacity of 72 seats and in the souvenir shop it is possible to buy postcards, maps, books, DVD movies, brochures, stickers, products made of natural materials – leather or clay. More information can be found HERE!

Symbolic Cemetery at Popradské Pleso

Symbolic Cemetery at Popradské Pleso

The Symbolic Cemetery (1525 m) is an important Tatra memorial site near the tarn Popradské pleso under the western walls of Ostrva. The memorial cemetery is intended primarily to commemorate those who died in the High Tatras or the exceptional people from the Tatras, who lost their lives in the world’s mountains. You’ll find here more than 160 memorial plaques and 50 hand-carved, colored wooden crosses. The founder of the cemetery was the academic painter Otakar Štáfl (1884 – 1945), who, together with his wife and several friends, started building it in 1936. It was handed over to the public in 1940 with the motto „In memory of the dead, warning for the alive“. Today, the symbolic cemetery is taken care of by the State Forests of the Tatra National Park. For its further expansion, strict criteria now apply for aesthetic and spatial reasons, and it is closed to visitors every year from November 1st to June 15th.

Crypt of the Family Szontagh in Nový Smokovec

Mikuláš Szontagh was an important doctor, the founder of Nový Smokovec and a pioneer of climatic treatment of respiratory diseases and tuberculosis. Under his leadership, Nový Smokovec grew slowly. When he died in 1899, there were up to 38 buildings that formed a complex of healing settlements. The rest consisted of summer houses. However, his personal life was often interwoven with grief and pain, as he was widowed twice. His third wife was the babysitter of her second marriage. He is buried in the crypt under the Evangelical Church in a tin chest next to his second wife and several other family members. The crypt and the church with the lecture can be visited by arrangement with the priest Pavel Kušnír.

The Tatra Jewelry Gallery is a jewelry gallery that sells and presents local work. The products come exclusively from artists and craftsmen from the High Tatras. They are inspired by landscape, mountains, fauna and flora. We offer paintings, ceramics, forged products, hand-painted scarves, books from the I&B publishing house about the High Tatras, and many other gifts and original souvenirs. Jewelry is made by hand, using old goldsmith’s techniques directly in the gallery, in a small atelier. It is interesting for visitors and customers who can look into the production process and get to know their jewelry perfectly with its origin. It is made of silver, gold, copper and brass in combination with the technique of real jewelry enamel or setting stones, which creates unique originals, suitable for pleasure and as a gift for more significant events. The gallery also organizes various painting symposia, creative workshops for young and old, but also lectures from which a 12-part series entitled “Jewelry and Personalities” is currently underway. All the exhibited objects are linked with the High Tatras and therefore you should definitely not miss this inconspicuous gallery!
